How To Plant Sulfur Cosmos in Grow Bags
Learn how to plant sulfur cosmos in grow bags for vibrant, healthy, pollinator-friendly flowers even in limited spaces. I’ve been seeing sulfur cosmos flowers for a long time but I do not pay attention to it. Until last year I decided to get a packet at the store and decided to try planting it. Because I was only testing, I decided to plant the sulfur cosmos in grow bags I had for a long time.
What is Sulfur Cosmos?
Sulfur Cosmos comes in shades of bright orange and yellow. Its scientific name is Cosmos Sulphureus. I learned that in American English, it is spelled as “sulfur cosmos” while in British English is “sulphur cosmos”.
How I Planted the Sulfur Cosmos in Grow Bags
I filled up the 10-gallon grow bags with our soil from the backyard. Yes, I dug up soil from our backyard to use for the cosmos seeds. Our soil is well-drained so I was confident that the cosmos would thrive.
It was the beginning of May when I sprinkled the cosmos seeds on top of the bag and covered it with a thin layer of garden soil. Yes, a different soil on the top then water them. I watered the seeds every day in the morning until the first week of June we had to fly to Vegas for a week so the watering stopped but it had been raining since we left.

While we were on vacation, I zoomed in the camera in the backyard and saw all the sprouts. I was ecstatic! All of a sudden, I can’t wait to go home! I was thankful too for the rain. If it wasn’t for the rain, the seeds would have probably died. So when we got home, the first thing I did was go to the garden and water all my plants.
How Often Do I Fertilize the Sulfur Cosmos Plants?
Would you believe it if I said I did not fertilize the cosmos plant? All I did was water it every day until it got tall and finally, the buds started to form around the first week of July. There were a bunch of them all they’re all cute!
What Month Do Sulfur Cosmos Bloom?
Well, they started budding on the first week of July, and a few days after they already started blooming. I was very excited! A bunch of them had bloomed all at once and it was a stunning cluster of yellow and orange shade.

How Often Do I Deadhead the Sulfur Cosmos Flowers?
I did not deadhead the flowers. I waited until they dried and harvested the seeds for this year’s garden. Although they reseed, I still want to make sure I get their seeds for this year. You can, however, deadhead if you want to.
Sulfur Cosmos Were the Bees’ Favorite Flowers
I would think so! The bees, butterflies, and even the dragonflies love them. The bees loved it the most! One day, I only saw one bee, then, it became two, until they multiplied.

How Tall Can Sulfur Cosmos Get in Grow Bags?
The small ones were about 10 inches and the tallest ones were 3-4 feet. By the way, when planting cosmos in grow bags or pots, make sure to position them in a sunny spot because cosmos love sunlight. My grow bags were positioned in a sunny area of the garden. The area gets sun in the morning until the sun sets.
Are Sulfur Cosmos Toxic to Pets?
Thanks, goodness, it is not. My dog is always with me in the garden and loves to supervise my plants. But, in case your pets chew or ingest the flowers or plants, it is always best to take your pet to the vet if there is a sign of toxicity.

Would I Plant the Sulfur Cosmos Again?
Absolutely! Every year from now on. It’s one of my new favorite flowers and I love that bees loved them. The pollinators are going to be spoiled again this year! Thank you for reading and happy gardening!
